Brief Description of ISE Department

Realizing well in time that the Information Technology (IT) wave has become a phenomenon in itself over the past few years, the institute established a separate department to cater the ever growing demand for professionals in this challenging field. The department of Information Science and Engineering (ISE) came into existence in the year 2000. The department is affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) Belgaum, Karnataka.

Top ranking students from CET and COMEDK will choose this department. Presently the department is headed by Dr. J. Prakash and supported by highly qualified and dedicated staff. The department has excellent hardware and software resources. The department also has the state of the art laboratories with advance configured computers and internet facility. The department offers post graduate program (M.Tech) in Computer Network Engineering (CNE). The department has a research centre recognized by VTU in which many research scholars are pursuing their Doctoral Studies (Ph.D). All eligible students are placed in high profile companies with good packages. There are sixteen faculties in the department. Dr. J.Prakash and Dr. Hema Jagadish have acquired their Ph.D in the field of Digital Image Processing, Dr. R. Nagaraja, in the field of Adhoc Networks and nine other faculties are pursuing Ph.D in different fields.

The department aims at cultivating the thirst for knowledge and the vision to look beyond the evident capability in students. The students are well versed with exhaustive and thoroughly chosen VTU curriculum and are guided by experienced faculties.

The faculties of the department have published their research papers in International and National Journals and Conferences. Various conferences, workshops and seminars are organized in the department to enrich the technical knowledge of the staff and students. The students of Information Science and Engineering are consistently securing University ranks and excel in their academics.

Product Development

  • Mr Hansum Krishna, final year student of the Department of ISE developed AgroSquad which is a unit of wirelessly communicating autonomous sub-systems that make use of image processing, and embedded systems with modular sensors to survey and manage agricultural landscapes for optimizing crop production. Multirotor-copter based areal imagery detects soil variations, crop quality and pest/fungal infestation - which aren’t apparent at eye level, while the ground level probe capsule gathers soil-specific parametrical measurements for ensuring crop quality and yield.
  • Mr Hansum Krishna also developed Project DriX which is an advanced voice-enabled driver-assistance AI for human-driven vehicles, which uses driving behavior recognition system, comprising a set of sensors embedded in the driver’s console – discretizing driving patterns on a highly individualized level.
  • Mr Shriyan, 2nd year student of the department of ISE build an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) capable of being controlled using hand gestures which benefits the disabled persons. As those persons with the hand gesture moves to the direction they want to go without pressing any buttons.

Infrastructure and Facilities available:

Department has enough class and tutorial rooms, there are 3 UG class rooms,2 PG class room with most of them equipped with projectors, one PG lab and research lab and there are five well equipped laboratories. The library is equipped with books, journals and student project reports, for quick reference for both students and staff.
The Departmental Laboratories - Algorithm & Data Structures, Database & Networking Labs, Web Technologies, system software & operating system lab and the Microprocessor Lab are equipped with state of the art technologies. The systems work on a dual processor capable Intel-Xeon server, enabling students to access resources across the department.
The internet facility is provided by the Department with the speed of 10Mbps(1:1) leased line from Aircel for all systems available in the lab.

Research

The department has VTU recognized R & D center which engages the faculty and research scholars to help the institutions growth by motivating research, guiding students, conducting research and evaluating their status. The Department motivates staff towards research other than teaching. Faculties of ISE are engaged in paper publication and more than 60 publications have appeared in various national and international journals and conferences of IEEE, ACM, Springers, Elsevier etc. The research center of ISE has 2 guides namely Dr. J.Prakash and Dr.R.Nagaraja and the students are working as research scholars under various areas like Digital Image processing, pervasive middleware, Cloud computing and Routing in social networks etc. Faculties from our department and also from other institutions have registered for Ph.d in the research center. Two research scholars (Hema Jagadish and Hema malini) have been awarded Ph.D in the area of digital image processing. Students are also encouraged for paper publications.

About Computer Network Engineering

The PG program CNE, started in BIT in 2014 to educate, develop and produce professionals in the field of computer networks, who can provide solutions in telecommunication networks, cellular networks, multimedia networks, adhoc networks, , wireless networks, storage systems, Internet of Things, Big Data Analysis etc using Machine Learning, web mining and other techniques. Students are provided with infrastructure and faculty support to develop skills in wireless networks, telecommunication networks, multimedia networks, network security, multitier architecture programming, networks simulation, deep learning etc.

The PG program is headed by Dr R Nagaraja, who has 30 years of teaching experience and has guided several students in BE, MTech and PhD level in state of art technologies. His students are well placed in higher posts in reputed IT companies.

Department has well educated and highly experienced staff to train the PG students in all aspects of Network Engineering Domain. All 3rd semester PG students are doing internship in reputed IT companies like HP, HCL, Oracle, BSNL, Alcatel-Lucent Technologies, Nokia, NetApp, Mind Tree, Microchip Technologies, Robert Bosch and other reputed IT companies with stipend up to Rs 35,000/- per month.

The program has the credit of getting ranks every year and this year alone 3 ranks are secured and nearly 90% of PG students are employed. Students are taught how to use peer reviewed journal papers for presenting papers and doing innovative projects. All students do present papers in reputed peer reviewed journals as part of the academic requirements.

Lab Facilities

We have a network laboratory for the design and evaluation of computer network architectures. We also have a lab with 1GB network with high end systems for regular lab activities, like distributed computing, network security, IOT, network programming and other related fields. These facilities are for the exclusive use of students and staff, providing resources that are among the best in the country.

PG students will be able to use up-to-date learning resources including a well-stocked library with traditional and electronic media, general-purpose network computing facilities, and dedicated laboratories for activities ranging from program development to network configuration and communication system experimentation.
