Civil Engineering

DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

The Civil Engineering department is one of the first departments established by the college during 1979 with an intake of 90. Currently the department has an intake of 180 students. The department was established with an objective to train and develop Civil Engineering Professionals who will be sensitive and serve for the betterment of the society. It is doing its best with the support of competent faculty and well equipped laboratories to develop quality civil engineers.

The department is also offering M.Tech Program in Structural Engineering with an intake of 18 students. The department is recognized as Research Centre by Visvesvaraya Technological University and offers M. Sc. Engineering (by Research) and PhD Programs. We have association with acclaimed professional bodies.

Our students have excelled in extracurricular activities and have brought many prizes and awards in ICI and ACCE(I). students have been placed in consultancy firms, construction industries, infrastructure facilitators and Government sectors.

  • PEO1: will be trained to excel in their professional career by acquiring factual, analytical, procedural, application and creative knowledge in mathematical, computing and civil engineering principles.
  • PEO2: Will be trained to analyze and design practically sustainable civil engineering systems which involve sound civil engineering skills, optimum and acceptable solutions to the society.
  • PEO3: Will be trained to exhibit professionalism, ethics with good communications skills background.
  • PEO4:Will be trained in continuing education and engage them in lifelong learning to be competitive and enterprising

Infrastructure And Facilities Available:

LABORATORY DETAILS

The department of Civil Engineering is having well established laboratories catering the needs of both B.E. and M.Tech. programmes. Laboratory courses are designed to support theoretical concepts taught. All the laboratories are well equipped. Project works, dissertation works and thesis works are supported by the laboratories. The following are the main laboratories in the department.

COMPUTER LAB (Area - 55.3 Sq.M):

AutoCAD 2016, Auto Desk Educational Suite for Civil and Structural Engineering 2011 Version, STAAD PRO, STRUDDS, ANSYS.

STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING LAB (Area - 171.5 Sq.M):

50T and 100T Loading frame and accessories for beam and column testing, 25T Loading frame for testing slabs, Strain book 8 channel with data acquiring system, Uniaxial shaking table of 30kg pay load, Structural dynamics multistoried frames (demo models), Vibration sensors with data acquiring systems, Polariscope with accessories.

GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING LAB (Area - 154.5 Sq.M):

ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING LAB (Area – 240 Sq.M):

HYDRAULICS AND HYDRAULIC MACHINE LAB (Area – 484 Sq.M):

POST GRADUATION

Department of Civil Engineering has started this PG Program in the year 2003. The program is approved by AICTE and is affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Karnataka. The M.Tech (structures) programme is of four semesters (two year) duration. During this tenure, they acquire the in depth knowledge in various fields of Civil Engineering though the rigorous, brain storming teaching- learning process. In addition, the students will be encouraged and motivated to learn the art of effective dissemination of knowledge through seminars and technical paper publications. They are even trained to carryout good project work/dissertation, so that in future, they are enabled to shoulder the responsibility of performing, managing any project efficiently. The special feature of the programme is to develop aspirant students as self-pride, confident, efficient professionals/entrepreneurs/consultants. Students will have 6 months internship programme during third semester and our department center provides facilities for internship recruitments from major companies. Most of the students have bagged internship in very reputed companies and they offered placement in the same.

Facilities

RESEARCH

Research grants of 9.2 lakhs was sanctioned by Visvesvaraya Technological University to carry out the research work at Bangalore Institute of Technology in Civil Engineering Department research centre for the research work on “An experimental and numerical investigation on the performance evaluation of PSC beams retrofitted by different techniques using artificial and natural fibre reinforced polymers”. Reasearch grant of Rs. 19,50,000 is sanctioned under AICTE MODROBS to principal investigator Dr. K. V. Vijayendra of our department during the year 2018. The department is accredited by National Board of Accreditation.

The department is associated with Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, Indian Concrete Association, INSTRUCT, Indian Green Building Council, Indian Chemical Council, Mumbai, Indian Society of Hospital Waste Management. Internationally BIT’s civil department is associated with the Indian chapter for Academy of certificate Hazardous Material Managers (ACHMM – India).

Civil engineering students have excelled in extracurricular activities and have brought many prizes and awards. Various National and international workshops and conferences were organized by the department in co-ordination with the management of Rajya Vokkaligara Sangha and other bodies.
