DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY

ABOUT DEPARTMENT:

The Department of Engineering Chemistry came into existence along with the establishment of the institution in the year 1979. The Department is currently headed by Dr. Chandra Shekara. B. M and has a team of well qualified and dedicated staff members. The department is involved in teaching Engineering Chemistry theory and Engineering Chemistry laboratory courses for the first year BE students of all disciplines.

The department is also engaged in research activities in various fields of Applied Chemistry like heterogeneous catalysis, energy, reaction kinetics, medicinal chemistry and material science.

    Research Initiatives: The department has a well-established Research Centre recognized by Visveswaraya Technological University since 1998. The centre has received 7 research grants from various external funding agencies like Department of Science and Technology (DST), New Delhi, Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Mumbai, Heavy Water Board, Mumbai and VTU. The centre is engaged in academic research in various fields of Applied Chemistry like heterogeneous catalysis, adsorption, reaction kinetics, material science, alternate energy sources, synthetic chemistry and medicinal chemistry. More than 50 papers are published in peer reviewed, reputed international journals of high impact factor and one patent is filed. 10 scholars have acquired Ph. D. degree from the centre. The research centre has state-of-the-art facilities for preparation of new chemical materials, characterization and study of catalytic activity. These facilities are being extended for engineering students for their project works.

    Facilities available in Engineering Chemistry Laboratory: Distilled water plant, pH meter, potentiometer, conductivity meter, colorimeter, hot-air oven, flame photometer.

    Facilities available in Chemistry Research Centre:

    1. BET surface area analyzer – Quanta chrome Nova-1000.
    2. Gas chromatograph – Chemito GC-1000, IRIS software
    3. FT-IR spectrometer – Shimadzu IR affinity-1, IR solution software.
    4. UV-Visible spectrometer- Chemito UV-2100, Spectroscan Series.

    6. Vapour phase reactor
    7. High pressure liquid phase reactor.
